“Very High Fires Risk” in four Greek regions, incl islands, Sept 2 (MAP)

A “Very High Risk of Fires”(risk category 4) has been forecast in four Greek regions for Saturday, September 2, 2023, according to the Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection ministry.

The region of Evros in north-eastern Greece. where the fires have been burning since August 19 is also among the areas of “very high risk of fires.”

“Very High Fire Risk” (category 4) for the following areas:

  • Attica
  • Sterea: Viotia, Evia, Skyros
  • East Macedonia/Thrace: Evros
  • North Aegean: Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria

Regions marked “YELLOW” indicate that they are at “High risk of Fires” (category 3).

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection recommends that citizens be especially careful and avoid actions in the open air that can cause a fire by negligence, such as

  • burning dry grass and branches or cleaning residues
  • use of machines that cause sparks such as circular saws, welding devices
  • use of outdoor grills
  • smoking of bees
  • burning of fields

Winds are expected to reach maximum 6 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.
