The movement of Paros “Reclaim the Beaches” that brought the top prosecutor of the country to intervene, finally woke up also the Greek government.
The government intervention comes as new complaints come from the island of Paros. Members of the movement “Reclaim the Beaches” reportedly denounced that first row of sunbeds close to the sea cost 120 euros and 40 euros far behind. Furthermore, there are bouncers keep away anyone who attempts to lay a beach towel in areas illegally occupied by each bars, sunbeds and umbrellas.
After the reactions and complaints about the phenomena of lawlessness on the beaches of many islands of Greece, the government proceeded to intervene, while the “movement” is starting to grow.
Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis reportedly gave an order to intensify the controls on the beaches, to ensure compliance with the provisions of the concession contracts and the imposition of sanctions on the violators.
“The controls, either ex officio or following complaints submitted by citizens, will be intensified throughout the summer season in order to respect the terms of the contracts signed with the businesses, to ensure citizens’ access to the beaches in accordance with the rules of the Constitution and to protect the image of the Greek tourist product”, the Ministry stressed.
He added that “It is noted that as part of the checks already being carried out and following the complaints submitted for the small and large Santa of Paros, officials of the Syros Land Service conducted autopsies between July 21 – 24, found significant violations and are immediately proceeding to issue removal banksnewscols three companies from them”.
Hatzidakis statement
The Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis stated: “In any case, our decision is to uphold the legality of the beaches granted by the State and to fully honor the contracts that have been signed. Any violation of legality will find us opposite. I instructed the new General Secretary of Public Property, so that, in cooperation with the competent real estate services, the relevant controls will be intensified with all the foreseen consequences for the violators. Let those who do not respect the content of the relevant contracts know that we are not going to spare anyone.”
