Greek Police have arrested three Greeks after a large amount of cocaine was found in a container at the port of Piraeus. Among the arrestees is a former well-known football player whom authorities suspect to have been the leader of the gang in the country.

The vessels had departed from South America.

According to cnngreece, the 41-year-old ex footballer is considered to play a central role in the trafficking of  the large quantity of the cocaine.

In fact, authorities report that the 41-year-old man was the leader of the group and had taken over the contacts with the drug importers and traffickers, while he also coordinated the pickup of the cocaine from the containers with the aim of delivering it to the final traffickers.

The Narcotics Prosecution ascertained that the quantities of drugs had arrived in containers. 58 improvised nylon packages wrapped in adhesive tape containing the cocaine were found in the vessel’s freezers.

According to kathimeriini, one of the arrested, a woman was privately employed refrigeration operators. Those arrested were tasked with removing drug packages  hidden in the refrigeration systems of shipping containers.

Αs part of their investigation, police installed monitoring systems at Piraeus container terminal.

The cocaine was reportedly destined for European countries.

A total of three people were arrested, while six mobile phones, cars and a motorcycle were confiscated.
