New Democracy leader and aspiring next prime minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced the creation of a Family Ministry once he win the upcoming elections and manages to form a single party government. His plan was met with outrage by parts of the Greek society.
Speaking to Skai TV on Sunday, Mitsotakis revealed his plan of the Family Ministry saying that the Labor Ministry will be split in two, the part that concerns the Family will be independent and will deal with everything that has to do with family and welfare policy.
Until recently, these responsibilities were included in the two portfolios of the Deputy Minister responsible for Welfare and Social Solidarity and the Deputy Minister responsible for Demographic Policy and Family Affairs.
According to Mitsotakis, the Family Ministry will be the pillar to deal with the demographic issue.
“This will be combined with a series of incentives for the balance of family and work life with special programs and allocation of funds to support specific policies for families and promote equality at work between men and women” the conservative ND leader said.
Angry Reactions
Mitsotakis’s plan triggered an outrage on social media, with many Greeks “suspecting” a Greek version of “Handmaid’s Tale” with ultra-conservative parts of the society pressing for a ban of abortions as they did in the recent past and pro-life policies, with the government blessing.
Note that abortions are legal in Greece since the early 1980’s.
On social, some Greeks accused Mitsotakis that with a Family Ministry he creates the conditions for the support of very conservative voters ahead of June 25 elections who may vote for smaller far-right parties, thus stealing from him the absolute majority.
And the usual mean Greeks claim that with the specific ministry Mitsotakis is winking exactly to these far-right parties to get their support in the future.
It should be recalled that there is a growing trend on Greek social media with young (?) men and women, eponymous and anonymous users as well as TV celebrities posting in favor of a woman serving a man who in addition is the only provider of his family and similar crap coming from the early Christianity, the Middle Ages and Greece before the 1980’s.
PS On this part, really mean Greeks claimed that Mitsotakis will create a Family Ministry in order to create jobs for his close and broader family that counts dozens of members.
