The Greek Justice Ministry’s bill on the implementation of the European directive on the dissemination of terrorist content online was approved by the Hellenic Parliament’s plenary session on Thursday evening.
After a debate and vote, the bill was approved by New Democracy, Pasok-Kinal and Niki. Syriza-Progressive Alliance voted ‘present’, while the Communist Party of Greece, Greek Solution, Spartiates and Plefsi Eleftherias all rejected it.
On June 7, 2022, EU Regulation 2021/784 on addressing the dissemination of terrorist content online became applicable, meaning that internet companies in the EU must take swift measures to prevent the misuse of their services for dissemination of terrorist content. The new legal framework aims at preventing terrorists from easily exploiting the internet to recruit, encourage attacks, provide training and glorify their crimes, according to the EU official website.
