“If the Greek authorities were able to detain all 100 through some kind of “artificial detention”, this would contain elements of revenge or attribution of collective responsibility,” Croatian president Zoran Milanovic said with regards the detention of dozens of Croatian hooligans so far, involved in attacks outside the AEK stadium beginning of the week.
As he pointed out, according to dnevnik.hr, “Police have the right to detain them for five days. That period is now running out and if they are all detained, 100 people, regardless of why they came down – they went to fight and I can’t support that – it’s a strange behavior. But citizens have their rights. The circumstances of the murder have not been clarified,” Milanovic told local media dnevnik.hr.
“If the Greek authorities were able to detain all 100 through some kind of ‘artificial detention’, this would contain elements of revenge or attribution of collective responsibility. I expect that very soon, and that means within the five days stipulated by law, those responsible will be held accountable.”
“Even the circumstances of this man’s death [ie the 29-year-old AEK fan Michalis Katsouris] are not clear,” Milanovic stressed.
The Croatian president also commented on the open letter sent to the media by the Croatian parents, asking for the release of their children. He has been informed about the letter, but he stressed that the parents should not get involved. Those arrested, he added, “are adults, their parents did not send them there. They went it alone and some will be held accountable for it. But having 100 people in custody…”.
“Now most (of the fans) must be released. If they detain them all, it’s de facto martial law, you can’t detain them all,” he noted.
Athens responded to Milanovic accusations via “government sources” who said on Sunday that “Justice in Greece is independent.”
