Party organs of SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance are rushing to deal with the new situation that emerged after the announcement of Alexis Tsipras that he will not again be a candidate for the presidency of the party.
The party Political Secretariat and the Central Committee meeting in the coming days in order to shape the road map of the reorganization and reconstruction of the political body.
The Political Secretariat of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance will meet within the weekend, to begin the process of electing a new leader from the membership base.
SYRIZA leader since 2008 and Prime Minister 2015-2019, Alexis Tsipras, announced that he was stepping down form the party leadership on Thursday.
The left-wing and main opposition party suffered a crushing defeat in the June 25 elections.
According to media information, critical decisions regarding potential candidates for the position of president are expected to be taken already on Friday.
Among the names of those circulating as potential candidates for the SYRIZA leadership are former finance minister Evkleidis Tsakalotos and ex regional governor of Attica Rena Dourou.
Citing party sources, media reported that the party’s parliamentary group will also meet in the coming week to elect a new chair who will represent the party in parliamentary procedures, particularly ahead of the three-day plenary session on the new government’s policy statements.
