Greek MEP and former Vice President of the European Parliament Eva Kaili was released from prison on Wednesday by order of Belgian prosecutor Michel Claise following a detention of over four months, said her Belgian lawyer Sven Mary.
Kaili will be placed under house arrest, wearing an electronic tracking bracelet.
Her Greek lawyer, Michalis Dimitrakopoulos, stated that “Eva Kaili is leaving prison with her head held high and with dignity, she did not confess to crimes she did not commit, and she will fight for her innocence until the end.”
She was arrested and charged in early December 2022 by Belgian prosecutors, who are investigating a case of corruption and money laundering within the European Parliament.
Eva Kaili is one of the main suspects in the Qatar-Gate, a cash-for-influence corruption probe at the European Parliament, and the last suspect to be released from prison.
