Europe’s highest-ever monthly precipitation fell in Makrynitsa, Mt Pelion during Storm Daniel

The highest monthly precipitation ever recorded in Europe fell in the village of Makrynitsa on Mt Pelion during Storm Daniel, which ravaged Greece in September.

Αfter the transmission of measurements by the weather stations operated by the Athens National Observatory in Thessaly was restored, it was found that the weather station at Makrynitsa had recorded an unprecedented 1,235 mm of rain up until September 20, 2023, which was the highest monthly amount of precipitation ever recorded in Europe.

Additionally, during Storm Daniel the record for the highest precipitation per day was broken in four weather stations operated by NOA’s meteo.gr weather service, with Portaria in Pelion topping the list (762 mm), followed by Zagora, Pelion (760 mm). The previous record holder was Makrynitsa, Pelion (417 mm) from 2009.
