An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale rattled the island of Zakynthos earlier on Thursday. Its preliminary magnitude was initially given as 4.4R.

Seismologists appear reassuring even though they are concerned about the earthquake impact on the famous sightseeing Navagio – Shipwreck- .

According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 21 kilometers of Volimi, west-southwest of Zakynthos.

Its focal depth has been estimated at 20 kilometers.

Geology professor and head of the Greek Natural Disaster Management (OASP) Euthymis Lekkas told news website newsit.gr that “the earthquake occurred west of the island in an area that is right on the Greek arc and seismic vibrations are expected. It is within the framework of the current seismic activity, right on the Greek arc”.

Stressing that the 4.3R did not cause any damages, Lekkas added that they are investigating the possibility of having some subsidence in the Shipwreck Bay and that he  doesn’t there is any problem.

Regarding the aftershocks he underlined that seismologists are monitoring the  phenomenon, adding “I don’t think there is any cause for concern.”
