A group of refugees in Greece has completed training for emergency situations. The first phase of the training funded by European Union resources was completed with an exercise and the presentation of certificates at the Ministry of Migration & Asylum on Tuesday.

The training was carried out by the Greek Fire Brigade.

The training included an exercise with three different emergency plans that refugees carried out next to firefighters. They included pulling a woman out of a fire, evacuating a building that was on fire (similar training is used for evacuations after earthquakes), and helping put out a fire and evacuate residents from the source of fire.

Funded by EU Recovery Fund resources, the program is implemented by the International Organization for Migration, under the supervision of Deputy Migration & Asylum Minister responsible for Integration Sofia Voultepsi, and under the operational direction of the Fire Brigade, coordinated by Fire Captain Kalliopi Saini.

Voultepsi said that “Greece is the only country in the European Union that decided to use resources of the Recovery Fund to integrate refugees and migrants.”

She added that nearly 400 refugees from 22 countries “create an integration network, raising the level of security within and without facilities.”
