The lighting ceremony was inaugurated by outgoing Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyiannis in front of hundreds of Athenians and tourists.
The 17-metre-tall Christmas tree was transported from the town of Karpenissi, in western Greece.
It has been illuminated with 24,000 small LED lights and is decorated with hundreds of balls and other ornaments.
More than 83km of Christmas lights have been put up on trees and columns in the city, while more than 3,800 aerial and arched light decorations are setting the tone of the festive season across downtown Athens.
The full program of festive events by Athens Municipality will be announced in the coming days.
