Greek-Lebanese shipowner found dead in his home in SE Athens

Greek-Lebanese shipowner Imad Zein was found dead in his house in Voula suburb of south-eastern Athens late Thursday afternoon. He was the head and co-founder of Naftomar Shipping & Trading company.

The 63-year-old shipowner was found dead in the basement of his house by his wife and a member of his security guards who notified police.

Next to him there was a carbine but also a note, media reported, without revealing its content.

Police officers rushed to the scene and are conducted investigation into the circumstances of Zain’s death.

According to initial reports there were suggestions that the carbine was fired by mistake.

However, late in the evening media reported that Zain took his own life at 4:30 p.m..

News website newsit.gr and other media reported that the shipowner went to the basement area which was also used as a gym. from there he sent a message to his wife, who was upstairs, asking her to forgive him for what he was about to do.

He then took his own life by pointing the carbine at his chest.

The Naftomar Shipping & Trading company was founded by the Zein family in Beirut in 1972. It was owned by Imad Zein and his brothers.

The company’s address were transferred to Athens in 1991 and specifically to a building constructed for this purpose in the suburb of Voula.

An autopsy is yet to be carried out, while police is continuing investigation to definitely exclude a crime.

Note: Some Greek media refer to Zein as ‘Greek-Lebanese’ and other as ‘Greek-Syrian.’

The father of five children from two marriages belonged to the Arab elite in Greece.
