Cameras on the Acropolis to prevent theft of “small souvenirs”

The risks of theft of  small “souvenirs” from the scattered stones and marble pieces at the Holy Rock of the Acropolis of Athens are great as there are visitors who often try to take with them a small piece, even though this is exprecessely prohibited. Cameras is the solution.

There may have been controversy over the cameras during the election period for the Municipality of Athens, but there was no discussion about the dozens of cameras installed on the Acropolis.

Some 150 additional cameras have been arranged by the Ministry of Culture to be placed on the Holy Rock, daily tovima.gr reported. the new cameras are to replace some of the 35 old cameras that already had been installed but they  have been deemed insufficient or incompatible with the new technology.

“However, cameras without a control center do not work, so together with the new cameras, a control room will be installed,” tovima.gr noted.

The control room will receive all the signals that the cameras will send electronically on a 24-hour basis.

PS It is highest time for the Culture Ministry to move towards the protection of Greece’s most precious symbol after the number of visitors broke any previous record this year.
