A Danish couple was arrested on the island of Zakynthos on Wednesday after they left an one-year-old infant locked in the car and went shopping.
They face charges for exposing a minor into danger.
According to preliminary reports by state broadcaster ERT, the couple on vacations on the island in the Ionian Sea rented a car in the Tsilivi area. They left the baby locked inside the car to go shopping.
Passersby saw the abandoned infant inside the car and called the police.
The officers unlocked the car and got the baby out safely. The infant was taken with an ambulance to the hospital for tests as a precaution measures.
Police officers estimated that the baby was around half an hour alone in the car.
The 34-year-old mother and her 31-year-old partner, who is reportedly not the baby’s father, were arrested and are expected to appear before a prosecutor later on Wednesday.
The incident occurred just two weeks after a 5.5-month-old baby girl died in western Greece after her father “forgot” her in the car for several hours. The tragedy has shocked but has also apparently sensitized the Greek society.
