Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis commented on the resignation of main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras with a comment characteristic for his own spiteful rhetoric.
Mitsotakis called the decision of Alexis Tsipras “expected” and argued that SYRIZA “identified itself with toxicity, with divisive speech and deafening ineffectiveness”.
The PM was asked by Greek journlaists to comment while he had arrived to attend the summit of the European Council in Brussels.
“I consider that it was an expected decision after three crushing defeats suffered by SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras personally in national elections.
I consider that with the resignation of Alexis Tsipras, a circle closes. SYRIZA was a party that in recent years, both in the government and in the opposition, was identified with toxicity, with divisive discourse and deafening inefficiency when it was finally called upon to manage the fortunes of the country.
Parties must unite citizens, and they must first and foremost propose reasonable, cost-effective and workable solutions to citizens’ problems. SYRIZA never followed this path. I hope he finds it. I sincerely wish him that.”

SYRIZA-affiliated newspaper avgi.gr and many on social media, characterized Mitsotakis’ comment as “vile, small-minded, petty, pusillanimous and undignified” of a prime minister to make such statements about his political opponent, , at his most difficult moment, at the moment of his departure.
PS at least he did not laugh with spitefulness when Mitsotakis said what he said…
It reminds me though the Alt-Right rhetoric of accusing their opponents of “toxicity and divisiveness” when it has exactly the same characteristics.
