Greece’s population declined in the past decade. according to the official Census 2021 published by the Greek Statistics Authority on Friday. December 30, 2022. Permanent population is 10,432,481, down 3.5% or 383,805 since the previous count in 2011 (10,816,286).
The “legal” population. i.e. citizens is 9,716,889, down about 1.9% or 187,397 from 2011 (9,904,286)
The detailed data of the Statistical Authority by regional unit, municipality and municipal unit will be published in the Official Gazette.
At the same time, the data was submitted to Interior Minister in order to determine the new allocation of seats for the parliamentary elections in 2023.
According to media, the new census data will bring changes in the distribution of 16 parliamentary seats. The number of deputies elected in the districts of Greek capital Athens will increase as 5 additiona; MPs will be elected, while ‘losers’ will be Epirus and Western Macedonia, where t2 seats will be lost.
According to the new population data, two seats will be won by the South Sector of Athens B’ and the Eastern Attica region, while an additional seat will be won by the Northern Sector of Athens B’, the Western Sector of Athens B’, as well as 1st Thessaloniki and Achaia.
Seat will be removed from Serres, Fthiotida, Magnesia, Kozani, Arta, Kastoria and Thesprotia, which will be single-seat regions, as well as Piraeus A’.
