One metro station in Thessaloniki was opened to public for sightseeing tours only on Sunday, as the metro in Greece’s second biggest city is not expected to be in operation before the end of 2024.

Hundreds of locals visited the brand new and unused “Agia Sofia” metro station, went up and down to the platforms and were stunned that despite the time they spent there …they did not move to another station.

They all hoped that one day the project that started 36 years ago will indeed materialize.

Present at the grande visit “ceremony” were also the Transport and Infrastructure Minister and local dignitaries.

The opening to the public was in the context of the city’s “Open House” event, which provides free access to 71 public and private spaces of architectural interest, including monuments, schools, homes, hotels, offices, and medical offices.
