Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, said on Friday that legislation ending the “state monopoly” on university education was imminent.
in an interview with state broadcaster ERT, Pierrakakis underlined that “the state university remains the flagship of university education in Greece but it needs to be further reinforced and improved to maximize its results.”
“We cannot, however, continue to preserve in the country a global exception, a state monopoly on Greek tertiary education,” the minister added.
He said that the ministry is going to table a draft legislation in parliament before the end of 2023, in order to move quickly and “take advantage of the great potential that we have not tapped into for so many years for various reasons.”
According to previous media reports, the private universities will offer among others studies on Medicine and will be established in cooperation with ones abroad for example in Cyprus.
