An Italian national, aged 60, allegedly a high-profile member of the Italian Camorra criminal organization, was arrested at Gouvies, on the island of Corfu, in a broad collaborative operation of Greek and Italian police, it was reported on Saturday.
The man was arrested as he was coming out of his home, in enactment of a European Arrest Warrant for financial crimes that was pending from the Naples Prosecutor’s Office.
This person had been a fugitive since 2012, having been sentenced to 14 years and 4 months in prison for money laundering, while his name was included in a list of the Italian interior ministry’s most dangerous fugitives.
His arrest was the successful result of a collaboration of Greek and Italian authorities, with input by the security office of the Italian Embassy in Greece.
The man was living and working in several Corfu restaurants in the last years.
The alleged Camorra-criminal, a devoted fan of Napoli FC, was identified as the man on the warrant, after a recent win of his favorite football club and a picture of him on his home balcony.
