A 43-year-old woman, a police officer, is struggling for her life in the ICU of a hospital of Larissa, central Greece, following a brutal assault by her 53-year-old husband, a tavern owner well-known in the area.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 3, after an intense argument escalated and the husband brutally attacked her.
The victim suffered heavy injuries in the head and the abdomen with broken jaw and teeth, a rupture of one kidney and the spleen.
Her health situation is considered as “very critical” and she is expected to undergo surgeries on Friday. “She is unrecognizable,” doctors told media.
The argument reportedly erupted after the victim told her husband that she wanted a divorce and take the couple’s two minor children with her, local media reported.
It is not the first time that the husband went violently against his wife, state broadcaster ERT reported. According to some media, the police officer had filed against her husband for domestic violence in the recent past, he was detained and then set free.
It was neighbors who heard the voices and screams coming from the couple’s home who informed police and ambulance.
A police patrol responded to the scene and arrested the 52-year-old perpetrator.
Initially, the perpetrator was charged with domestic violence and causing bodily harm. However, given the gravity of the assault and the life-threatening injuries inflicted upon the victim, the prosecutor has now pressed charges to attempted murder.
The society in Larissa is in shock and many locals flooded social media with their outrage and down-voted the tavern urging others to never visit it anymore.
The tavern has been closed since the owner’s arrest.
