A father in Thessaloniki killed his 42-year-old daughter, a multiple sclerosis patient, with his own hands because he “could no longer see her suffering.” He later tried to take his own life with a speargun.

“I killed her. I could no longer bear to see her in this state, suffering from her illness…”. With these words, the 69-year-old father justified his action to his son.

With the same words he confessed to police that his daughter, Katerina, suffered from multiple sclerosis, she was in a bad condition and that she was tormented by her illness.

The victim was found in the bathtub by her brother on Tuesday evening. As the father did not respond to his phone calls, the son went to his home where he found him bleeding on the floor with an injury in the abdomen.

The 69-year-old man was transferred to the General Hospital of Thessaloniki , where he is being treated.

The wheelchair-bound victim was living in Sykies, Thessaloniki, and was being taken care of by her father and a caregiver. The mother had reportedly died of cancer some 25 years ago.

The victim’s friends and neighbors told media that she was suffering from multiple sclerosis since the age of 14-15 and that she had learned to deal and live with the illness.

A neighbor of Katerina, the unfortunate girl who was murdered, spoke after the murder about what she lived and saw with the family.

A preliminary investigation into the tragedy is being conducted by the Thessaloniki Security Directorate.

PS  Caregivers who are dealing with chronic ill family members is a category of “workers” which the Greek state completely ignores. Even though they are often worn out financially, physically and psychologically due to a 24/7 demanding “job”, they are socially isolated and often suffer from untreated depression and keep struggling without support. The burden is often unbearable. And one day, they may snap…

The absence of welfare state in the country is deafening.
