Tragic end for newly wed Austrian couple missing in Pilion floods

The operation to locate the Austrian newly weds couple swept away in south Pilion by the storm Daniel beginning of the month seems to have a tragic end.

Greek authorities are expecting the results of two DNA tests to identify the remains of a man and a woman who were found on Mount Pelion in the last few days.

Authorities want to determine whether the two bodies belong to the Austrian newly weds who went missing during the devastating floods caused by storm Daniel on September 6, 2023.

The Austrian couple, said to be from the city of Graz and aged in the mid 30’s, were staying in an accommodation in the seaside village of Potistika, along with another couple from Austria.

The second couple was found healthy a few days after storm Daniel swept away the village of Potistika.

Coast guard crews found a woman’s body on the beach Lytri of Theotokos on Friday, September 8.According to a statement by the Coast Guard, the body was 1.65 high, did not wear clothes or had personal items.

The man’s body was recovered  from the sea off the coast of Mourta beach on Wednesday, September 13.

Both villages are in eastern Pilio,

According to banksnewsthema.gr information, the man’s body has a tattoo strongly indicating that it belongs to the missing Austrian man.

Official sources said the DNA procedure can last up to 20 days.

The missing Austrian couple had rented a vacation home in the coastal village of Potistika, which was destroyed by the floods.

The couple had married two weeks ago in the Pilion village of Argliasti.

Officially, the number of identified dead in the floods remains 15.
