The Greek government has accepted an offer of help from Polish firefighters specializing in wildfires. Poland ’s State Fire Service commander announced that 149 firefighters and 49 vehicles are set to take off from Kraków on Wednesday.
Poland will send firefighters to help it cope with wildfires burning in multiple places around Athens, with more extreme heatwaves on the way,
Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kamiński announced on social media. “Greece has been hit by massive fires. Acting in agreement with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, I have asked the commander of the State Fire Service to prepare our firefighters for departure to Greece,” Kamiński wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

The minister added that he hoped they would be able to help Greece “just like two years ago when they helped put out fires in southern Europe.”
“Polish firefighters are ready to offer their assistance,” Andrzej Bartkowiak, the State Fire Service commander, said.

A total of 286 firefighters and 46 engines from Poland assisted their Greek colleagues in the devastating wildfires in summer 2021.

Wildfires continued to burn out of control on Wednesday to the north and west of Athens, including a blaze near the resort town of Loutraki, where more homes were damaged and evacuations were expanded. A raging fire on the island of Rhodes forcec evacuations of four villages and one hotel.
