Turkey will vote for Greece’s candidacy in the elections for the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and his counterpart, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced on Monday.
In return, Athens will support the Turkish candidate for the position of general secretary of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the two ministers announced.
Dendias and Cavusoglu had a 20-minute face to face meeting on the sidelines of the Donors’ Conference on Turkey and Syria in Brussels, early Monday afternoon.
it is the first time the two foreign ministers meet after the earthquake in SE Turkey, when Athens immediately responded with rescue assistance and Dendias traveled to the neighboring country to see the extent of the disaster.
The rapprochement, called also Earthquake Diplomacy, is the first after almost a year of constant aggressive rhetoric and threats on Ankara’s part towards Athens.
Worth noting is also that Greek air space violations by Turkish fighter jets and spying aircraft have stopped after the earthquake.
