Tourist falls and dies during climbing Mt Olympus

A 47-year-old Polish woman was found dead on Mt. Olympus at an inaccessible point near the refuge ‘Agapitos’ on Tuesday after she fell and her teammates called for help.

According to media information, the woman was climbing the mountain when she lost her balance and fell. A member of the group called the 112 emergency number midday.

The Fire Service launched a rescue operation with 24 firefighters, emergency and mountain climbing rescue teams, and a unit from Katerini and Litochoro.

When the woman was found, her body was lifted with a Super Puma helicopter to the ‘Agapitos’ helidrome, from where a Fire Department helicopter transferred it to Litochoro military camp. There her body was picked up by an emergency service (EKAV) ambulance.

The operation concluded in the late afternoon.

The Dion-Olympos Police Department is investigating the incident, while an autopsy will be carried out.
