Stormy winds force Sailing Ban at several Greek ports

Gale-force winds have forced authorities in Greece to impose a sailing ban at major ports in Athens/Piraeus as well as to suspend local ferry lines in several parts of the country.

Ships were forbidden to sail from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 due to gale-force winds blowing with intensity of of up to 9 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

Ferry connections to the islands of the Saronic Gulf were only being carried out by closed-type ferries.

The ferry lines between Agia Marina-Nea Styra, Kalava-Prinos and Kavala-Thassos were suspended, while the Volos-Sporades islands ferry lines began operating after 10:00.

On Tuesday, March 18, authorities had imposed a sailing ban from the ports of Piraeus and Rafina for ferry lines with destination the Cyclades islands.

Passengers intending to travel on Wednesday are advised to contact port authorities and travel agencies before departure to be informed of possible changes to ferry itineraries due to the bad weather.
