Over 80% of Covid-19 Cases on Crete From Delta Variant

The daily cases of Covid-19 in Greece remained elevated on Monday, as 1,834 total cases were recorded across the country, as the Delta variant spreads across the nation.

The current figure marks 276 more instances of the virus than the 1,558 cases that had been recorded on Sunday.

Just 14 of Monday’s total cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 123 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, which is the same number of patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country yesterday, Sunday.

Tragically, eight people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which is two fewer than those who died with the virus on Sunday.

466 cases of the Delta variant in Greece

The Delta variant of Covid-19, first discovered in India, has quickly spread across Greece.

A total of 466 cases of the variant were discovered in Greece after tests of 856 samples taken from the period of June 17 to July 12 were completed on Monday.

Nearly 300 other samples examined during that period were linked to other coronavirus variants.

Of the 1,834 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 720 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

In the city of Athens, a total of 181 cases of Covid-19 were identified Monday.

A total of 221 coronavirus cases were found in Crete, where the delta variant has taken hold. Around 80% of the total cases recorded on the Greek island were linked to the fast-spreading delta variant.

Over 400,000 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 459,146 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 141 are associated with foreign travel and 1,360 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 123 patients intubated currently, 89.4% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 66.

Additionally, a total of 2,760 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The eight new deaths recorded on Monday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 12,858; 95.1% of those who have passed away with Covid-19 were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.

Covid-19 measures in effect on Mykonos

New, stricter measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus will be imposed on the popular Greek island of Mykonos, it was announced on Saturday afternoon.

According to a statement issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of Greece, a nighttime curfew will be in place from Saturday, July 17 until Monday, July 26.

Specifically, all people on the island, including residents and visitors will be barred from being able to get out of their houses and rooms from 01:00 am until 06:00 am the following morning.

Additionally, music will be banned in every public venue on the island, beginning on Saturday, at 6:00 PM local time.

It is also noted that organized private events, such as parties, are also banned, with fines being exceptionally stiff for offenders.
