Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the conclusion of two key agreements on electrical interconnection and railway infrastructure with Italy during a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni.
Following their meeting, Mitsotakis described his discussions with Meloni as substantive and said the number of agreements signed demonstrates that the Greece–Italy High-Level Cooperation Council should convene more frequently.
He referred to the railway agreement signed between the two countries’ transport ministries as a restart of bilateral cooperation in that sector.
“Greece is set to invest over €400 million in its rail network, while Italy will contribute €360 million to acquire new trains and build new depots,” Mitsotakis said.
On the energy front, Mitsotakis highlighted the ambition to triple the electrical interconnection capacity between the two countries and said that Greece is an electricity-exporting country.
He added that both TERNA and ADMIE have been instructed to move forward with the project, which is expected to cost €1.9 billion.
“The direction we are giving to TERNA and ADMIE is to move forward with the project as quickly as possible,” he said.
Mitsotakis also described the joint handling of illegal migration at the European level as a shared success, pointing to effective border protection and efforts to dismantle smuggling networks.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, he stated that Greece and Italy are fully aligned in their determination to push for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as soon as possible, with the support of all European countries.
