Since it made landfall in Greece on Thursday, the rare Mediterranean hurricane Ianos has caused the deaths of three people in Thessaly and widespread destruction around the country.

In the region of Thessaly, located south of Macedonia, entire towns were flooded, particularly around Karditsa. Hundreds of residents were trapped in their homes and vehicles, unable to escape as strong currents rushed around them.

At least three people have died in Thessaly, including a 62-year-old resident who was trapped in his home after the roof collapsed.

Currently, there are two missing people in the area who authorities fear were carried off by the destructive flood waters. They include a 43-year-old woman whose empty car has been located, as well as a shepherd from the area.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will arrive in Karditsa, Thessaly in the coming days to assess the damage to the area. He will also determine the necessary measures to best help the region recover from the damage left in the storm’s wake.

Video shows the extent of the damage in the town of Mouzaki near Karditsa, where buildings collapsed and roads were completely flooded:

The Ionian islands were the first part of Greece impacted by the destructive storm on Thursday. As Ianos moved across the country through the weekend, the true amount of damage and destruction in the islands has become clear.

Images from the islands show the destruction of entire buildings and extensive damage from the storm’s strong winds and heavy rain.

Currently, Deputy Minister for Civil Protection Nikos Chardalias is visiting the Ionian Island of Ithaca, where he is meeting with local officials to determine the best recovery strategies. His next destination will be Zakynthos.

Shocking video from Kefalonia shows the catastrophic impact of Ianos on the beautiful town of Assos, where a mountain of rocks has formed, covering cars and filling roadways.

After ravaging the Ionian Islands and Thessaly, Ianos headed toward Crete, where heavy rains from the storm caused flooding around Heraklion. According to residents, the floods have cause roadways to turn into rivers, leaving people trapped in their cars and homes.

Additionally, extreme weather conditions caused power loss in many areas around Heraklion. Lightning caused by Ianos lit up the sky over Crete, as shown in video:

Since the storm began in Greece, there have been a total of 2,400 calls for help from all around the country. Rescue workers have conducted 942 rescue missions to free citizens who were trapped by flood conditions.
