Greece’s parliament honors memory of Holocaust victims

Greek Parliament honored the memory of the victims of the Holocaust ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day on Thursday evening by displaying the slogan “We remember” on its facade.

The logo displayed a photograph of prisoners in a Nazi concentration camp.

January 27 marks the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Lawmakers in Parliament held a minute of silence to honor the victims on Friday morning.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said among others:

“As there will be fewer eyewitnesses alongside us, it is a historical and moral duty of all, on this day, but also every day, to remember with awe those dark moments of Europe, to continue to investigate this past in depth and, little by little, to pass the torch of memory, as is the title of this year’s events, to the new generations. To ensure a future that is peaceful, democratic and free from racist hatred, from manifestations of anti-Semitism and other discrimination against our fellow human beings.

This is how we will pass on knowledge and memory, but also how we will deal with anyone who does not want to know or remember, so that such calamity can NEVER EVER happen AGAIN.”
