Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued an emergency bulletin for a weather deterioration with heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms and snow in the mountainous areas.
The weather deterioration follows prolonged sunny days in January with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius.
According to EMY’s emergency weather report, successive waves of bad weather will affect Greece as of Thursday evening, January 19, and will last until Monday, January 23, 2023.
Heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms are will be accompanied at times by a high frequency of lightning, hail and by strengthened winds on the seas.

The bad weather front is forecast to initially affect the west, the north and later the east, the islands in the country.

Thursday to Friday, Jan 19-20, 2023
According to EMY, heavy rains and storms are forecast to affect:
a) the northern Ionian Sea, Epirus, western Sterea and western Peloponnese from Thursday evening until Friday noon, Jan 19-20. The phenomena will temporarily weaken and from the evening of Friday to Saturday they are forecast to strengthen again from the west.
b) central and eastern Macedonia and Thrace from Friday morning until the evening, Jan 20.
c) the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese and possibly temporarily in the Cyclades and Crete, from the pre-noon hours on Fridays and until the evening.
Snowfall will occur in the mountains of Epirus, western Sterea and western Macedonia (indicative altitude 1000-1200 meters).
Saturday to Monday, Jan 21-23, 2023
Heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms are forecast:
a) northern Ionian Sea, Epirus, western Sterea and western Peloponnese from early morning hours of Saturday until the evening and again from Sunday evening until Monday noon.
b) central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea from midday on Saturday to midday on Sunday and again from midday Monday until the evening.
Snowfall will occur in the highlands of Epirus, western Sterea and western Macedonia (indicative altitude 800 meters) during Saturday.
Winds will be blowing throughout the Aegean Sea with intensity 7-8 Beaufort and up to 9 B locally.
