The number of coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours is 2,461 new, with 4 of these identified at entry points to the country.

Greece has confirmed 360,577 infections from the start of the pandemic (daily change: 0.7%). In the confirmed cases of the last 7 days, 52 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,062 to other confirmed cases.

A total of 737 patients are on ventilators in hospitals. Their median age is 67 years and 83.7% have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or more. Another 2,174 have been discharged from ICUs since the pandemic began.

In addition, 371 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the last 24 hours (daily change of a -5.36%). The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 384.

The median age of new infections is 44 years, while the median age of the deceased is 78.

The announcements were made a few hours after the European Union announced a deal with BioNTech/Pfizer to buy up to 1.8 billion additional doses of their coronavirus vaccine.

The deal comes as EU countries ramp up their coronavirus vaccine programs after a shaky start, due to delivery delays.

Saturday’s announcement also underscores the confidence the EU has shown in the technology used for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which is different from that behind the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
