The second semi-final of Eurovision 2023 is over, with Greece failing to win the ticket to Saturday’s Grand Final. 16-year-old Victor Vernicos and his song “What They Say” did not manage to get the audience support.

Predictions for Victor Vernicos, “the little boy-scout” as they ironically called him in Greece, were discouraging from the very beginning already in Greece and before the Eurovision appearance.
Critics blamed lack of singing skills, performance and lyrics in a “weird” English-mix language that nobody could understand. Some also pointed out to the singer’s family, one of the powerful shipowners in the country.
“This year’s choice of ERT was a 100% failed choice, no matter what its management now claims, no matter how much it tries to turn black in white. Let’s not fool ourselves, it was a lousy song,” one website noted.
Nevertheless, state broadcaster ERT claimed on Friday morning: “In fact, the audience [in the Eurovision hall) sang in chorus during Viktor’s performance that was spectacular but they failed to send him to the Finals.”
Greece failed but Cyprus succeeded and the question is now: to which country Cyprus will give the 12 points as Eurovision voting has rather geo-political motives.
Last time the Greek participation was disqualified from the Finals was in 2018 with Gianna Terzi and the song “My Dream.”
