Greece approves purchase of SPIKE-NLOS missiles from Israel

The supply of SPIKE-NLOS missiles systems for the needs of the Armed Forces was approved by Greece’s Government Council on National Security & Foreign Affairs (KYSEA) at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday morning.

SPIKE-NLOS is an Israeli fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile and anti-personnel missile with a tandem-charge high-explosive anti-tank warhead.

According to military issues website onalert.gr, the Greek Armed Forces wished to acquire the Spike NLOS type guided missile systems, in a contract estimated at around 370 million euros.

Ιt is expected to equip certain units of the Land Army as well as the Air Force and more specifically attack helicopters of the Apache type. These missiles are expected to join laso the arsenal of four Gunboats and four Unorthodox Warfare Vessels of the Navy.

It is noted that the supply of the SPIKE NLOS missile systems had particularly concerned the Turkish press, due to the extended range of the missiles, specifically up to 50 kilometers when launched from a helicopter and up to 32 kilometers when launched from land or naval platforms.

At the beginning of January, the Ministry of Defense had declared that it is a complex weapon system “which is applicable to vehicles of the Land Army and to surface ships and helicopters and had emphasized that three different contracts were made with different terms and technical specifications.”
