German MPs Urge EU to Transfer Refugee Children Amid Pandemic Fears

Approximately fifty German Christian Democrat MPs from the ruling CDU party recently urged Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, to transfer the thousands of refugee and migrant children currently in Greek camps to other EU-member states.

”Given the rapid spread of coronavirus, it is imperative that juvenile refugees be transported urgently (to other EU member states)” the German parliamentarians declared.

It should be noted that a number of German politicians, primarily from centrist and left-wing parties, have been urging Brussels and Berlin to ease Greece’s burden regarding this pressing issue for months.

However, this is the first time that politicians from the ruling center-right CDU party have taken such a stance.

“Many children suffer from mental trauma due to their experiences of the war. This situation cannot leave us unmoved; it is unacceptable for us Europeans,” the German officials noted in their appeal to the EU Commission President.

At present, several thousand children, some of them unaccompanied, are currently stranded in Greece.
