Fire Rages in Loutraki, Monasteries Evacuated

A fire rages near the seaside town of Loutraki on Sunday despite the overnight battle by the firefighting forces; two area monasteries have been evacuated.

At the same time, wildfires broke out in Pyrgos and Pylos in the Peloponnese and Megara in Attica.

In Loutraki, the fire that broke out on Saturday evening is still raging. On Sunday morning, the fire service stepped up operations with more that 170 firefighters, 24 vehicles and 15 hiking teams.

Early in the morning, firefighting aircraft started pouring water from the air. Specifically, four aircraft and six helicopters assist from the air. The Hellenic Army, regional authority personnel and volunteers assist in the battle. ,

The fire that reached Loutraki broke out on Saturday afternoon at a rural area in Perachora of Corinth. The strong winds made the job of firefighters more difficult and carried the fire further.

More fires in other parts of southern Greece

Meanwhile, firefighters battle the flames at Pyrgos, Pylos and Megara.

The fire in the Pyrgos area occurred on Saturday afternoon. Firefighting forces with 41 men, 11 vehicles and two groups of hikers managed to control the fire shortly before 8 am on Sunday.

A fire also broke out in the area of ​​Metamorfosi in the municipality of Pylos – Nestoras in Messinia. The fire broke out in an agroforestry area and 20 firefighters with 10 vehicles and one hiking group are trying to extinguish it.

The fire that broke out in Megara is also in progress. The fire broke out at 8pm on Sunday. Thirty-nine firefighters with 11 vehicles and two groups of hikers fought the blaze.

Within a 24-hour period, from 19:00 on Friday to 19:00 on Saturday, a total of 68 forest fires occurred in Greece. The fire service also warns that all day Sunday many areas in south and central Greece are at high risk of fire due to the strong winds.
