Ferries on the Adriatic route will remain docked on June 3 and 4, 2025 due to the 48-strike announced by the Panhelenic Maritime Federation PNO.
Vessels on the route Patras-Igoumenitsa-Italy will remain docked in the ports of Patras and Ioumenitsa, western Greece.
The strike begins at 00:01 Tuesday, June 3, and ends at 24:00 on Wednesday, June 4.
Seamen on the Adriatic route demand increase of personnel on this route stressing that the situation poses risks not only for the seafarers themselves, but also for the safety of passengers and the navigation as a whole.
A letter, signed by the Secretary General of the Hellenic Maritime Organization, Manolis Tsikalakis, includes clear proposals for the minimum required number of crews per sector of operation of the ship.
The Hellenic Maritime Organization points out that this staffing is considered absolutely necessary, not only to combat exhausting overwork, but also to “ensure safety and protect human life at sea”.
According to the Labor Center in Patras, also the Italian seamen join the strike.
In a statement they urgently demand safety measures.
Among others, they demand:
• A doctor on every ship on the Adriatic routes.
• Strict implementation of ship loading and unloading regulations.
• 24-hour stay off the ship at the seafarer’s request at the port of departure or destination. Allowance in case of express routes.
• Intensive and substantial checks for compliance with safety and hygiene measures by the Merchant Shipping Inspectorate.
The seamen recall the tragic accident and the death of their colleague, a 47-year-old sailor woman at the port of Patras who was swept by a truck during disembarkation in last April.
The truck driver had reportedly told authorities that nobody warned him that a person was on the vehicles platform of the ferry.
