An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale rattled the island of Crete on Friday, May 30, 2025. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) measured the tremor at 4.5 R.
According to Greek Geo-dynamic Institute the earthquake hit at 3:40 in the afternoon, with its epicenter being 8 km North-West of of Arkalochori close to the city of Heraklion. Its focal depth was 13 km.
Aftershocks measuring 3,7 R, 3,4 R and 3,3 R were particularly felt in the area.
Nobody was injured and no material damages have been recorded.
However, residents rushed to the street when the earthquake struck, as οωερ 3,000 houses and businesses in Arkalochori when an earthquake hit with 6.3 R in September 2021.
A week ago, a tremor hit the island of Crete with 6.1 on the Richter scale, caused minor damages and some landslides.
Seismologists remain reassuring saying that the earthquake today was “an expected phenomenon in the context of the post-seismic activity that continues after the strong earthquake of Arkalochori, in 2021,” so Geology Professor at the National University of Athens.
Speaking to local media neakriti.gr, Papanikolaou noted that this is a normal release of the geo-dynamic stresses that had accumulated in the area and added that the phenomenon is being closely monitored by scientists.
