An earthquake jolted with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted the island of Crete at 14:30 on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
According to the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the quake’s epicenter was located in the sea area 14 km east of the islet Chryssi of Lassithi in eastern Crete and its focal depth was 9.2 km.
The earthquake caused rockfalls and landslides in parts of Ierapetra-Myrtos/Viannos road.
According to the Mayor of Ierapetra, Manolis Fragoulis, the landslides after the earthquake were immediately repaired by municipality crews and no other damage has been reported in the area.
He added that all-day schools were closed, while those that operated in the afternoon will also remain closed.
Regarding tomorrow, unless there is something unforeseen, schools in the Municipality of Ierapetra will operate normally.
Seismologists appear reassuring saying that the earthquake off Crete is not connected with the 5.8 R between Rhodes and Turkey in the early hours of Tuesday, creta24.gr reported.
