Images of shame at the center of donations collection for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria. Clothes, baby diapers and baby milk lay like in a garbage dump outside the Logistics Center of the Attica Region on Saturday.
It was photographer Giorgos Moutafis, who captured these picture of shame and uploaded on social media and shocked not only donors but also those who saw it.
The picture was published as the Region of Attica boasted of sending 50 vehicles with humanitarian aid to the earthquake victims.
The press office of Attica region said in a statement that the clothes were worn out and were to be recycled.
Speaking to Open TV, deputy regional governor of Attica, Christos Theodoropoulos, said that “‘the clothes were dirty and not of used, they stayed there for some 40 minutes and then were collected for recycling.”
He spoke of difficulties with the tons of arriving item donations.
“An extraordinary effort was made by many agencies and thousands of tons of humanitarian material, blankets, medical material, clothes were collected. When thousands of tons of material arrive, not only is the collection done, it is also sorted and categorized. This is complicated by one more factor. When the Turkish embassy started and asked us for some items from the region and the co-organizers, in the second year, as not only Greece sends aid, they send various countries, they finally told us that we do not want clothing, dry food because we have found from other countries. Reduce the items you collect and we want these.”
