The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon announcing the cancellation of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest due to the coronavirus pandemic.

”It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam,” the EBU stated.

This is the first time in its entire 64-year history that Europe’s most popular music and television show has had to be cancelled.

The EBU said that the contest will not take place in 2020 and it is now discussing with the Dutch authorities to see whether they would like to host it in 2021.

”We know that the whole Eurovision family will continue to provide love and support to each other at this difficult time,” the European Broadcasting Union concluded.

Greece was scheduled to be represented this year by Stefania Liberakakis, a 17-year old Greek-Dutch singer, who would have been performing in her home country, the Netherlands.
