Athens Named Eleventh-Worst City in the World to Drive in

A new survey published on Wednesday ranking the world’s best and worst cities for driving confirms what most Athenians already know from experience. The Greek capital has earned the dubious distinction of being ranked as the eleventh-worst city in the entire world for driving.

The latest index from the European automotive group “Mister Auto” ranks 100 cities across the world based on several crucial metrics, including cars per capita, congestion, road quality, average speed, car age and access to public transport.

It also assesses the costs associated with driving in each locale, such as fuel, parking and taxes, as well as overall safety, including fatalities and road rage incidents.

Sebastien Rohart, the head of the Mister Auto group, says that cities need to keep building road infrastructure for the foreseeable future, since cars — using either gas or electric power –will likely remain the most common form of transport.

“Our study shows that while many cities already have the infrastructure and legislation in place, there’s still a lot of work to be done toward making driving safe and affordable across the board,” says Rohart.
