The first Animals Police is ready to start its works on the island of Crete. it is a pilot project expected soon to assume monitoring the well-being of animals also in other regions across Greece.
The first Animal Police will try to put an end to the animal abuse incidents in Crete, where they are hundreds every year.
The animal police officers will check for pets and strays but also for animals in remote areas.
The newly established Animal Police consists of four groups of specifically trained police officers. Every group will have five police officers and each group will be located in a different of the four prefectures of the island.
The officers were trained by the Zero Stray Academy in a live seminar that took place at the Heraklion Police Directorate, led by Police Chief and Commander of the Sitia Police Department, Manolis Voutyrakis, for the protection of animals.
At the same time, the Police Operations Departments (TAE) of Crete were also trained so that they can provide support, especially in the control of extremely remote areas.
Particular emphasis on the value of this effort is given to the method of its implementation.
The Zero Stray Pawject carries out intensive information campaigns for local communities, specialized educational programs, as well as a program of mass electronic marking, sterilization and alternative DNA collection in collaboration with the municipalities of Crete and the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Companion Animals of the Ministry of the Interior.
