There is so much to see on this island, and in order to set your own pace, driving from each destination point to the other is one of the best ways to really enjoy yourself and experience authentic Greece.

The town of Tinos, also called Chora, has the most popular attraction on this island, the Church of the Virgin Mary, (the Panayia Evanyelistria Cathedral).

Many Greeks visit this Church regularly and pray or give thanks before the icon of the Virgin Mary, as it is known to be a source of numerous miracles.

Tinos is home to beautiful towns and villages

While visiting Tinos you will find that there are many villages close to the town of Tinos which are often visited as hiking destinations.

Pyrgos village, located just northwest of Chora is a quaint village that transports you to another time with its traditional Cycladic architecture.

Here you will find yourself strolling the whitewashed narrow alleys, visiting small churches and taking an endless amount of photos of the white-washed cubic houses with brightly painted doors and windows.

Another main attraction of Pyrgos is the Museum of Marble Crafts – a must see on your trip to Tinos. After all, marble has been a big part of the island’s history and its architecture.

Tinos is the birthplace of many modern Greek sculptors; the best known is Giannoulis Halepas, from Pyrgos.

You can also enjoy a traditional meal in one of the town squares at a local taverna. The atmosphere and food are sure to be unforgettable!

Very close to Pyrgos village is a great beach called Rohari Beach.

Although it is an organized beach, complete with a beach bar, you can also opt to chill out under the trees and just relax on its sandy expanses.

Fatalados is a charming and old village on Tinos, dating back to the 1400s.

It sits like an amphitheater opposite the village of Kechrovouni and still boasts some working winepresses and raki distilleries, which celebrate the historic roots of the village.

The village also has a Folklore Museum where you can learn more about Fatalados’ history, and every September the village throws an array of festivals to celebrate the raki-making season.

Loutra is yet another unspoiled village you can check out while visiting Tinos – where only 35 permanent residents live!

This village is one of the most historical and oldest villages on the island and is known for its monasteries.

Important sites on the Greek island

Located just 8 km north of the town of Tinos, Jesuits and Ursuline monks created various monasteries in this village, including the Monastery of the Ursulines in 1862.

The Monastery of the Jesuits, dating back to 1840, is considered to be the most important site in the village. Today, in one of its rooms it also has a folklore museum that is open to the public.

Another place that you want to be sure to check out while visiting Tinos is Kardiani village.

This village is located in one of the greenest parts of the island. The village is like a painting, lying gracefully on the slopes of Mount Pateles. It’s only 16 kilometers northwest of Chora, so there is no reason to miss out on seeing this hidden gem!

If seeing ancient ruins is your thing, Tinos will not disappoint. The island has many ancient ruins and those at the site of the ancient capital of Tinos at Xomburgo are magnificent.

From here you will have great panoramic views of the Aegean Sea – you can enjoy the views and snap some unforgettable photos.
