The relatives of the Greek man and his two-month old baby daughter who were killed in Trier, Germany on Tuesday after they were hit by a drunk driver, have shared a heartbreaking message they left on the sidewalk where the father and daughter were killed.

Giorgos Kompilidis, a 45-year-old dentist, and his infant daughter Virginia were among the five people killed in the southwest German city of Trier on Tuesday after a German man who police described as “severely intoxicated” rammed into pedestrians, mowing them down.

Relatives of the family, who had been out for a walk together before the tragedy, left a heart-wrenching note in Greek for the father and his young daughter, who he held protectively in his arms as they were killed.

“My Virginia, hold your dad tightly in your arms so he can care for you up in heaven. Look after your mom and your brother like the angel that you’ve become,” the note reads.

Although no motive for the attack has been determined, eyewitnesses claim that the man was “zig-zagging” for around 900 meters (0.5 miles) at an extremely high speed in his SUV, seeming to aim for those walking along the streets leading to the city’s famous Roman Gate, Porta Nigra.

Kompilidis’ wife and young son were also injured in the attack, along with 16 others. Wolfram Liebe, Trier’s mayor, was left “speechless” at the attack, and described the scene as “horrible,” something that he never imagined could happen in Germany’s oldest city.
