Miltos Tentoglou won gold for Greece in the long-jump on Friday at the indoor European Athletics championship which takes place at the Torun Arena in Poland.

The Greek champion achieved the world’s best jump of the year landing at 8.35 meters in just his first effort.

He edged out Sweden’s Thobias Montler by four centimeters. Finland’s Kristian Pulli was third with 8.24 meters.

Tentoglou skipped his second, third and sixth attempt, while his fourth and fifth were invalid.

The athlete from Grevena, northern Greece, who will be 23 years old later this month, added this year’s gold medal to that he secured two years ago in London.

He is also the reigning European Outdoor Champion after his gold in 2018 in Berlin.

Speaking before the final, he said he felt great and he believed he could come close to his personal best, which is 8.38 meters.

“The competition is being held under difficult circumstances but even without any spectators it is still a European Championship and I want to give all my best,” he added.

The European Athletics stages the first multi-discipline championships in the sport since the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ever since the inaugural event held in 1970 in Austria, European Athletics Indoor Championships, have been considered one of the key competitions in the sports calendar of Europe.

Over 600 top European athletes participate in the medieval grounds of Torun between March 4-7, 2021 to struggle for points in the 36th edition of the championships.
