Largest Wind Farm in Greece Opens on Evia Island

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially opened the largest wind power complex in Greece at Kafireas, on the island of Evia, on Tuesday.

The 300-million-euro facility, constructed by Enel Green Power, composed of seven wind farms with a total installed capacity of 154 megawatts, is able to generate approximately 480 GWh of power per year.

According to the company, the new wind farm will mean that nearly 494,000 tons of CO2 emissions will not be emitted into the atmosphere annually from the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity.

Antonio Cammisecra, the CEO of Enel Green Power, stated at the opening that “This important project shines the spotlight on our dedication to renewable energy and decarbonization, aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Objectives, as well as on our commitment to having a diversified mix of power generation in the nation.”

Prime Minister Mitsotakis said that his government’s goal is for Greece to become a pioneer in renewable energy resources, not just in “green” but also in “blue” development, using available resources in the seas.

The Greek premier said that the new wind farm is yet another proof of a significant improvement in the investment climate in the country, adding that Greece is changing for the better, with new investments and new jobs.

He described the Kafireas project, as well as the Mytilineos gas plant, which he officially opened two weeks ago, as “a sign of confidence in the government, that supports the productive forces of both investors and workers.”

Mitsotakis further noted that these recent positive developments, just three months after the election and less than 100 days after the new government’s swearing-in ceremonies, are not simply coincidental.
