The rapid re-spreading of the coronavirus in Greece has led Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and health authorities to take new measures to fight it, including restriction of public gatherings, mandating teleworking, and a 14-day suspension of cultural events.

The Prime Minister, who met with other governmental authorities on Friday morning, announced that the alarmingly high number of new Covid-19 cases in the past few days — and especially in the Athens urban area — makes the new preventive measures imperative.

“The government is ready to implement additional measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus in Attica,” the Prime Minister declared on ERT, Greece’s public television channel.

“I am fully prepared, following the relevant suggestion of the (health) commission today, to take some additional measures regarding public gatherings, the suspension of cultural events for 14 days, measures that encourage teleworking in both the public and private sectors, in order to limit unnecessary commuting,” PM Mitsotakis said.

“The measures we take must first of all be workable, we should explain them with the necessary persuasiveness and, ultimately, they are the measures we must take now to avoid measures which will have an economic impact, which Greek society and the Greek economy simply cannot withstand at the moment,” the Prime Minister said.

He continued, saying “If we implement the measures we have taken, I have no doubt that we will do well. But to be sure that we will do well, we must, first of all, focus on the implementation of the measures.”

The Prime Minister said that the health committee can decide on the new rulings today so that the new measures will be ready to implement on Monday. He expressed the certainty that if citizens actually follow the already-existing measures, the spread of the pandemic will be limited.
