Greek Authorities Present New Contingency Plans for Natural Disasters

The director of Greece’s General Secretariat for Civil Protection, Phoebos Theodorou, presented two new comprehensive government plans for addressing floods and wildfires in the country on Monday.

The new contingency plans have the code names ”Dardanus” and ”Iolaus.”

The presentation of the plans to the public was made in the presence of government spokesperson Stelios Petsas and Civil Protection Secretary-General Nikos Hardalias.

Petsas noted in his remarks that the priorities outlined recently by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis are being implemented in these two plans, underscoring that “the state’s first priority was, is and will be the protection of human life.”

Petsas also said that ”The prompt prevention and management of conditions that cause the emergency phenomena are at the epicenter of our planning.”

”The state is here, the protection of the citizens is our duty,” he added with particular emphasis.

For his part, Hardalias stated that proposed legislation regarding civil protection will be unveiled and brought forward for public consultation in the next several days.

In accordance with the Prime Minister’s instructions, the rest of the new plans for dealing with natural disasters will be complete by the end of February, 2020.
